Demcon for the first time publishes a Creating Shared Value annual overview with specific initiatives and statistics. This way the company accounts for its efforts in support of having social impact, and sustainability in projects and in its own business operations. This is part of its DNA focused on solving complex issues of a technological and social nature. But to measure is to know. Last year a lot of energy was therefore invested in making its social impact and sustainability performance measurable and in creating quantitative insight.

With the launch of Demcon data driven solutions on Jan. 1, 2023, technology developer and producer Demcon is taking the next step in its ambition to develop as a technology partner in the field of data science challenges. Since digital transformation is becoming more and more complex, there is a greater demand for data as a product or service. Examples include the development of an autonomous inspection camera for pipelines and algorithms capable of detecting when a patient in ICU starts breathing on their own. What began as an exploratory mission has now grown into a company with full-fledged data solutions.

De Ontdekfabriek, located in a former Philips building at the Strijp-S complex in Eindhoven, is an experience center, primarily aimed at the target group children aged 4-16. De Ontdekfabriek organizes and facilitates programs and events that contribute to raising awareness of technology design and innovation among children. Talented young (16 -24 years old) technicians and creatives play an active role to transfer their passion to children.

With some amazing feats at the start of her career, Monique Sommer (manager engineering at Demcon Advanced Mechatronics) charged into the field of electrical engineering and hasn’t stopped since. She has crafted a niche for herself in this industry, not only with her technical expertise but also by solving organizational problems and fostering mentorship for women in tech.

At the beginning of December, Dutch company Mellon Medical received a significant grant from the Eurostars Program. The grant was awarded to support further research into the continued development of an innovative suturing instrument, the Switch suturing device. During the official ceremony held on 20 December in The Hague, the spotlight was put on all recipients of a Eurostars grant. Jan Benschop, CEO Mellon Medical was among the recipients: “Thanks to this grant we can take the first steps towards clinical trials with the Switch. We will continue development and will manufacture multiple prototypes. We can then start with the initial pre-clinical studies at Erasmus MC this year. This will become the first ‘small bites’ suturing instrument in the world that will enable surgeons to place sutures faster and more precisely. This will allow them to reduce incisional hernias in the abdominal wall after operations by 50%. That means reduced inconvenience for patients and therefore a better quality of life. Furthermore, it helps drastically reduce care costs.”

That the Brainport region is of great strategic importance for the Netherlands, but also within Europe and internationally, has been known for years. So, for good reasons, the State and Brainport region will invest almost 1.6 billion euros in the accessibility of Brainport Eindhoven. A necessary step to create a nice environment for all current and future residents where they can live and work.
